"Hold up."
Their stop was unexpected. Hollis glanced over his shoulder at the deputy to see him looking around, as if he feared somebody noticing them. Behind them, the town of Floydville was quiet -- most folks had settled down for the night, and those who were still up, were spending their time at the saloon.
"Riggens?"
The deputy didn't answer him, instead turning back to him and reaching down to where Hollis' hands were bound behind his back. Moments later, the pressure from the heavy cuffs was gone. Hesitantly, he turned to face the other man, rubbing at the soreness around his wrists.
"Don't come back to Floydville, Garland," Mack said. "I'm goin' out on a limb here to let you go, and if you come struttin' back into town tomorrow, it'll be me on the gallows beside you."
"What's the matter? My sad ol' story got the best of you?"
"I ain't no genius, but I'm damn sure you ain't a murderer. There's real criminals out there that need to feel the rope around their necks, and we shouldn't be wastin' our time on you.... No offense."
"None taken."
"Get out of Floydville. Tonight. And don't come back until things are different."
"Any idea when that'll be?" Hollis asked.
"Just stay away. Should be easy enough for you -- ain't you a drifter?"
"I was...." Hollis hadn't meant to trail off, but his mind went to Bo. If he'd never met Bo in the first place, he never would have been around long enough for the law to get to him. Stumbling upon the Bronson farm had been the biggest mistake in Hollis' life.
"Maybe if you get bored you can head on over to Old Crow Stone and capture one of Ed's boys. Bring 'em in to the sheriff and get a pardon. You never know."
"What if I brought you Horace Ed?"
There was a small silence, and in the darkness Hollis couldn't make out Mack's expression. He was sure it was one of incredulity though -- ain't nobody dumb enough to go after Horace Ed.
"Dang, if you did that, they'd probably give you a medal or somethin'. But the chance of that happenin' is zero to none. More than likely, you'll get your dumb ass shot to shit."
A coyote's wail filled the distance, reminding them that they didn't have the time to stand there and yack. Hollis sighed deeply, breathing in the scent of the desert, and he reached for his waist. He felt naked almost.
"Where's my --?"
His pistol was placed into his hand, a reassuring item. The only thing that was missing....
"And before you ask, here's your hat."
Smirking, Hollis took the Stetson and placed it on his head. "Suppose it'd be too much to ask for a horse," he said as he holstered his gun.
"Suppose you're right."
"I got to stop somewhere before I leave. Got to say goodbye -- the Bronson farm."
"Make it fast, Garland. Everyone knows that's the first place you'd go. Sheriff'll probably be sending me there first thing tomorrow to look for you."
"Thank you. Ain't so bad for a lawman, Mack Riggens."
"And you ain't so bad for an outlaw. Now get the hell outta here before I change my mind."
