It was probably the strangest thing I ever said, something you'd expect a five-year old to blurt out in one of those dreamy moods. Kids could say the oddest things out of nowhere. but I was almost sixteen now, and listening to the same music i had heard every year. Come to think of it, i must have heard it even before i was born. It was the same harp, the same soft voice, a bit lower perhaps but it was still as soothing as always. But when it was over some of us sighed. No-one dared to start off an applaus. And that was when I said it. "I wish i could be that song." My father looked up. "you wish you could sing it?" I remember shaking my head. "no, i want to be it. To actually be made out of musical notes and sance from those strings and be sung liek that by someone else. And then people would enjoy it and sigh and maybe they would laugh and dance."
My brother grinned. He winked at me, as if he was used to hearing this type of remarks from me. It was perhaps the only thing he could do. HIs friend was the one who had played the harp, and it always made my brother proud. "well," he said, "is that the best thing you heard in your life or what?" I cleared my throat and took a large sip of water. What on earth had i just said? Maybe it was better to move to a different chair, somewhere where this musician wouldn't see me any more. How would it feel for someone like him to here someone wish they'dbe the music in his harp? It was liek the odd feelings i had when i was small, this sense of knowing the melodies were all stored inside that instrument, it was as if I finally knew how to put that in words. But it was utter nonsense of course. Once you cut off a tree and made something of the wood, it didn't live any more. And if there was any musician the forests we were the only one who could hear it and do something with it.
"I don't know," i heard the musician say, and i noticed he'd taken a few steps away from us. "I er, I'd liek to think...maybe we'd besttake a little break." Everyoen laughed and i wonderd if i was the only one who noticed he was twice as shy as usual. He would have merely said thanks, or laughed, or shook his head. But now the instruments where put aside and someone stood up and said 'where is that new bottle of wine you talked about?"
It gave me time to gather my thoughts. while some people took out coinsand moved forward, and one man said' no more strong drinks for those, the music hcomes from themselves, not from that odd stuff, i sank back in my chair again. moments later someone tapped on my shoulder. "You know what I think?' my brother said. "I think your wish has already happened." and he pointed atthe musician who coudln't seem to move, who tried his best not to stare directly at me.
