Word #94
I was away in a land without internet, so your word is a bit late this week. Here it is at last.
Don't look at the word until you are ready to write. When your fifteen minutes are up and you have completed your ficlet, you may either post it as a response here, or post a link to the ficlet in your own journal. If posting on your own journal, please hide the prompt word in some way (ie. under an LJ-cut) in order to avoid spoiling it for others.
Today's word is: watching
You can copy and paste this code when posting your ficlet if desired.

It had taken Dalia a little over a month to understand she was different from the other four people who traveled with her. To herself, it was obvious that every other person around her understood how life worked, and it was painful they didn't go out of their way to show her how to act. Certainly, she tried to act impulsive (normal) as they did. According to Adella, Dalia's freedom was unconditional. However, being free from Marek wasn't the same as being free from herself. Everything she understood was tied up into the man who once claimed her as his. Everything she did was calculated to give people (all right - Marek) a specific impression. If she wasn't perfect, if she acted as though she had her own mind, then she wouldn't be forgiven. Which had often resulted in pain or isolation. She wanted to be free. She wanted to walk through the invisible threshold that separated her from the people around her and set aside all that fear and training. Instead she remained where she was, doing everything expected of her, watching them live while she withered.
When would she learn to do more? To be more? Was it possible? She didn't think it was. So she remained as if behind glass, the palms of her hands bruised as she pushed on it, pounding for attention from those on the other side, but no one heard her.
Why didn't they? They had promised. Yet, now that she was free, Dalia was unable to decide what came next. So she waited, hiding behind her demeanor, letting the world pass her by.
All the while cursing and condemning those who freed her body but didn't teach her how to free her spirit.
