Title: Light packer
Fandom/original: Original
Characters: Could be anyone
Rating: G

The aeroplane screeched to a slow halt and I suddenly found myself waking with a jolt. Confused, I looked up only to send the pillow that had earlier been tucked under my head to promptly fall off. I readied myself to deboard the plane and within those few moments I could feel my heart thump with increasing loudness.

"So intimate yet strangely foreign", I thought as I looked out of the window to the smalltown I called home so long ago.

I had always known I wanted to leave home. Ever since a kid I knew I was somehow too big for this place.

"There is nothing wrong with what I did. People leave home. They seek new places to venture. Its the natural orer of things", I think to myself at a furious pace just to keep the tiny thought that constantly nagged me.

"Yes, but they dont severe all contact"

I take my bags off the overhead compartment and within moments I'm stepping off the plane and out of the airport.

I cast nothing but a sidelong glance towards the baggage claim.

No luggage.

I'm a light packer. always have been. Perhaps thats why I didnt keep in touch thinking that it would only drag me down.

Maybe I was wrong.

With my usual youthful determination I dived headlong into the future. I went as far as I could without even a look back and yet here i was.. back again.

I watch the scenery whizz by as my taxi races along.

Finally, I pull up to the place where it all began.

I pay the fare, drag my luggage out and after patting a kitten nearby I open the front door.

"Still no locks required", I think as the door squeaks its welcome.

I put one foot in front of the other towards the slightly battered door.

I find her as I always have.

In the kitchen, with an apron.

"Mom, I'm back.. ", I mutter

".. for good", I complete answering what I knew was racing through her head.

A slightly choked cry, the clattering of utensils and she has pulled me to a tight embrace.

Who says you can't go back??
