Kate looked around her sheepishly as she pushed her bangs out of her face yet again. I should get them cut, she reminded herself, and promptly forgot about it again, at least until they got in her face next time. Perhaps she had just dreamed of saying that- they didn’t look all that shocked.

And then the blank disbelief filtered slowly out, and Eric stood up first, his eyes blazing.

“Did you really just say that?” he said, and took a step forward. She nodded, trying unsuccessfully to blink back her tears.

“It’s been in the works for a while,” she said quietly. “I just never had the courage before.” Her mother looked like she wanted to slap Kate in the face, but the newfound sense of self in those steady brown eyes stopped her, and she dug her nails into her palm, speaking with controlled anger.

“Kate, darling, don’t you think you want to rethink this?” she said, very quietly. Kate knew that was the penultimate danger voice, but she shook her head.

“That’s just it,” she said, surprising herself with her courage. “I’ve been thinking about it. For ages and ages and ages. And I think I’m right. I’m giving you several months warning, nothing’s really been started yet. You have almost no money to lose.” She looked steadily at Eric. “It’s cancelled, Eric. I already called the planner and told her it wasn’t happening.”

“This all seems very sudden,” Eric said, trying to remain calm. “Maybe you could tell us what your problem with this is, and we could all work it out together.” Kate shook her head.

“No. It’s too dangerous for me. You see, I just don’t love you.” It was really as simple as that, and yet not. She didn’t want to talk about the other girl on his string in front of her parents, but her eyes told him she’d found out, and he clenched his jaw.

“It’s not that important, is it?” he said quietly. “We’ve been friends for ages. I know I’m in love with you, and I know you could fall in love with me.” Kate shook her head, very slowly.

“No,” she said firmly. “It’s definitely over.”

“Let Kate-girl make up her own mind,” her father finally said, and that seemed to settle matters, in Kate’s mothers eyes at least.

“Well, I hope you find someone who meets up to your impeccable standards,” she said with a small, sad smile, and Kate couldn’t help but feel slightly guilty. Her mother’s dream was to have grandchildren, and Kate was her only child.

“I’m sorry, mum,” she said. Her mother nodded briskly.

“It’s all right. I’m sure you know what you’re doing.” Eric came closer to Kate.

“Well, I’m not going to be submissive to your every wish and whim,” he snarled. Kate looked directly at him.

“Get out of my apartment,” she said. He paused, hesitated, and glanced around the room, as if seeking for support. Nobody moved to support him though, all three of them just looking at him, and he grabbed his coat and ran out the door angrily.

“Tomorrow for dinner still?” her mother said calmly. Kate nodded.

“See you guys then,” she said in an attempt at cheerfulness. Her mother and father left the room, and she sank to a chair.

It was bound to happen sooner or later, she reminded herself. And better now than after the wedding. But still, she couldn’t help crying softly as she curled up in the now darkened apartment.
