Your word for the week. :D

Don't look at the word until you are ready to write.  When your fifteen minutes are up and you have completed your ficlet, you may either post it as a response here, or post a link to the ficlet in your own journal.  If posting on your own journal, please hide the prompt word in some way (ie. under an LJ-cut) in order to avoid spoiling it for others.

Today's word is: map

You can copy and paste this code when posting your ficlet if desired.

This is the first time I've ever done one of these so please be nice! I have a question: is there a limit to how explicit a story can be? I've seen mostly G and PG stories on here, so I was curious as to the limit. I tried to keep this one safe, but it turned out a little darker than I wanted.

Title: Writing on the Wall
Fandom/original: original
Characters: Sean
Rating: PG-13 (frightening memories, rape (implied), violence)

He stared down blankly at the page in front of him, unseeing. Nothing registered in his cluttered mind, jumbled images flashing through his mind like broken shards of pottery clattering noisily on the floor. Unconsciously his long, slender finger traced the markings on a small hand-drawn map, worn down with use. Large drops of warm water rained down with increasing intensity, spotting the page. The tears continued to fall as his large green eyes remained unblinking, consumed by the memories that haunted him at every moment.

Help me Sean! Please! Anybody! Ahhh!

The tears fell faster and his hands clenched together, fists shaking with pain and fury at the onslaught of memory flashing through his brain.

"Why couldn't I save her? Why?"

A small girl cowered in the corner of a darkened shed, her clothing in tatters. Tears streamed down her face, rivers cleaning away the dirt. A large man loomed over her, smirking.

"No one can save you now, girly"

Frustrated, Sean tore up the map on the table.

"Why didn't I come sooner? How could I have let that happen? It's all my fault. I'm so sorry Sara."

He had never meant for this to happen. His sister had sent him a message, asking him to meet her at their special place after school. Just as he had been leaving to go meet her, he was stopped by a teacher asking for some assistance. Hoping it wouldn't take long, he followed.

"If only I had left right away! None of this would have happened. How could I have been so stupid!" His eyes squeezed shut and his clenched hands relaxed, letting the scraps of paper flutter down to the floor.

Half an hour later Sean was finally released. He ran to their meeting place, no longer needing the well-used map to find the location. He had been there many times. As he ran up to the shed he heard a scream from within.

"Sara!" Sean ran up to the door and kicked it open, but he was too late. His sister lay on the floor in the back, her clothing lying in shreds around her. Blood pooled between her legs and bruises darkened her skin.

"Well look who's here? Have you come to play with me as well?" Sean's attention snapped to the speaker, a man he hadn't noticed before. At the leering look in the man's eyes Sean backed away, frightened. "Don't worry, I'll be gentle with you." Slowly he started stepping toward Sean, arms outstretched.

"Get away from me!" Sean shouted. Glancing around the shed he grabbed the first object that came to hand and swung madly at the approaching predator. With a smack the board connected with the man's head. Momentarily stunned, the man stood there before crumpling to the floor, blood pooling from the hole in his head where a rusty nail had connected. Not giving the man another glance he swept his sister into his arms and ran.

"I'm sorry Sean." Sara smiled at him weakly before passing out.

Sean reached over and grabbed a knife from where it lay on the edge of the desk. It's sharpened blade glittered invitingly.

"I'll be with you soon Sara. And then you won't be alone anymore."

A family stood huddled around a small grave as a wooden coffin was lowered into it. Sean stood there, frozen, unbelieving that his sister was gone. He felt hollow, a part of his heart gone.

"I'll be there soon, Sara, don't worry. Your big brother won't let anything happen to you again."

With a sigh of fulfillment he drew the sharp blade across his wrist, cutting deeply into the tender flesh.

"I'm coming, Sara" he muttered as welcoming darkness enveloped him. "I'm coming."
